2009 Oh whitetails
Updated 1 year(s) ago
Last minute buck in 09 season ,I went back home to England to spend Christmas with my family, ended up getting sick, went into hospital, missed the flight home, thought I was going to loose what was left of the Ohio season. I finaly got home with two weeks left to hunt, still feeling like **** had no choice but to get straght out there, if I was to fill my tag, not just on a buck, but on one of two that I was after when I left. On returning I was happy to find out my son Luke had filled his tag on one of the two bucks we had targeted scoring just short of 160" gross. The high racked ten point was only thing on my mind ,that and the hope that the snow and cold weather would stay. The second day out and the buck shows himself, after twenty minutes he finaly makes his way down the field to us,at thirty yards he gives me the shot when I drew my bow he heard a creek from my chair ,that's all it took he decided to leave, but not before I get an arrow in him. The end to a long and frusterating season the buck grossed 162".

2008 Oh Whitetails

A Goal Achieved, This buck even though not the biggest by a long shot that I've ever taken, is most probably one of my greater achievements.
2008 was a year that changed my whole life, in fact it was a year I almost lost my life.In the spring of 08, May20th I flew to Alberta Canada with the plan to go to Saskatchewan after that hunt and then over to Newfoundland to film two of our SNA winners on their black bear hunts. Three days into my hunt,I fell ,when the stand I was in gave way, and the forgotten safety vest back in camp, did me no good. The next five month were spent in hospitals trying to recover. The accident left me in a wheelchair, they say for life, [ ha! what do they know,] During the limited rehab they tell you, you must set realistic goals, so my first goal as a die hard bow hunting, obsessed, whitetail, addict was to kill a Pope & Young Whitetail this year. With breaking my back at such a high level [T3 / T4] I lost all control of the muscles in my trunk, so when I tried pulling my bow , the weight of it pulled me over in my chair, along with the fact that atrophy had claimed the muscles in my arms, back, chest and shoulders, I was barely able to draw 45# let alone the 70# that I was used to.This was a battle that I was not going to loose, Firstly I had to overcome the balance issue, that was done with a piece of 2x6 under my arm then wedged between the inside of the chair and my leg, now I had control of my bow, I now need to draw it, pulling 45# was like 100#, back in the days when we use to show off, Working out got me able to draw 50#, and that was legal to hunt in Oh. With 34 stand locations already in place, none of them doing me any good. My son Luke had to set ground blinds in locations where I thought we were able to get to and hunt with the chance of getting a shot at a good buck.We did this with five blind locations. Now I'm able to shoot a 2"group that 20yds, and we have five ground blinds located, next hurdle, how do we get to the blinds quietly enough not to run off the deer we're hunting? Well that my friends is all about heart, not mine, my boy's, he dragged me, in an old wheelchair to each one of the blinds that he had set, until during the fifth week after my release from hospital I managed to close the deal on a 156" great Oh deer. Now if you think that was the end of it, wrong, the next two month were spent doing the same thing, except Luke was hunting and I was filming, and finally during mid Jan 2009 my son look a well deserved 140's 9 point. And that after three months of hard hunting and learning how to do it all over again, was the end of the 2008 hunting season for my son and myself. And a goal achieved. |
