I have a Winchester model 70 supergrade in 7mm mag. . I love the way it shoots. It is heavy to lug around. Has a long barrel, @ 24" . Shoots exceptionally well. The recoil is not an issue in 150 grain Remington ballistic tip ammo. If I were to go to 139 grain I am told the recoil is even less. Definitely need ear protection. I do not have a muzzle break on mine yet it is loud as are most magnums. I have not been elk hunting with it but it has flattened deer and hogs consistently. I call it my "shock and awe" rifle. Only real drawback for me is the weight on long haul hunting where you will do lots of hiking. I'm guessing 8 to 8 1/2 lbs. I have a Burris electro-dot scope in 3x9 and it is a fine rifle. I hear the ultra-mag 7 mm is even harder on the shoulder. I am interested in trying the Hornady Superformance ammo out in this gun as they claim their powder is colder burning but more performance and accuracy is found with less recoil. We will see. I have never felt the recoil as a problem when shooting at an animal. At the range you will probably feel the recoil a lot more as you know for sure. I like it, but am also interested in looking at the 7mm.08 as I have a friend who owns one. He has taken two bucks through the shoulder area and both did not take one step after being hit. This gun has minimum recoil and shoots like a laser. If I buy another all purpose Texas hunting rifle I think it will be the 7mm.08 for sure! It is a sweet round!

I asked about hunting rifles before buying one and alot of ppl were saying that the 7 mag is one of the better rilfes to take. You can take any animal in North American with a 7 mag and if you do research on it you'll find that the rifle has serious knock down with 150 grain or higher bullet. I only used it once to hunt muley's but coulda threw a rock and killed the buck. i shot it at about 15 yards so i cant brag about no 800 yard shot or anything. We usually go archery but having a 7 mag is nice addition=)

Both my husband and my father-in-law shoot a 7mm. My father shoots federal 150 grain bullets they definitely have the knock down power required for elk, especially at the yardage that we usually experience. He dropped a bull at 600 yards and the bull only went about 50 yards. My husband shoots the Hornady 154 grain bullets. The Hornady expand at impact better than the federals. My husband took a 746 yard shot this year on a 300 class bull. His shot was a bit back and so the bull traveled another 150 yards until he could hit him again and that was it.
They have been trying to convince me to trade in my 270 WSM for a 7mm. I like the 7mm, but I have short arms and really like the weight and balance of my 270. Maybe I'll try out the 7mm Short Mag.
There's my two cents. ;)

Recently traded a 30-06 semi-auto for a 7mm-mag. Haven't had the chance to fire it at live game yet, but I do like the accuracy at the range. Getting ready to set up some dies on the reloader and see just what I can gat out of it, hopeing to reach 800 yds with match point accuracy.

The 7mm has a flatter trajectory then a 30-06 and will drop an elk at 500 yards with 150 or 160 grain bullet. I love the hornady customs but can't wait to start reloading my own shots to see what I can do. I'm no marksman but I can shoot a can at 200 yards with coreloks. My huntin buddy shots a 270 and his gun is definately louder then my 7 mag but the hole the 7 mag leaves on a 15" log campared to the 270 leaves no questions on the knock down power of the 7 mag. (wish i took pics but was havin too much fun shootin=) )

I use a 300 Weatherby and love it. But my next choice would be a 7mag. Difinitely have some good knock down and a variety of loads for it. Good luck in your purchase.
