ATV use on Public forest land

Topics: 1   Posts: 5
First time in the woods of Montana with wife to chase the Elk around and three hours into the woods an ATV and motor cycle flies by us with no regard to us hunting as they were on their way to their spot as well.
We were glassing out into the landscape to view the outstanding forest and open fields searching hard for Elk and what do we see......across the hill  is Atv's ripping up the hill side surely pushing the Elk to the next state.
Love Atv's myself but this is just too much! Stuff like this forces folks to use an outfitter to be successful and that gets costly. Why do think the use horses? cause they are smart!

I totally agree with you. it's verry frustrating. before i shot this bull this year every set up i was in for three consecutive days i had the same exact two hunters walk right through my set up. The fourth day i was riding my atv up the trail to try it again and came across a group of 10 joyriding off the trail right through the spot where i knew the elk were. funny story in colorado there is a fine of $50 a foot that you travel off trail along with being illegal to harrass hunters and/or wildlife. yeah they got in big trouble. the next day i landed this monster. so keep in mind the elk most often return to their "home"

When I lived and hunted in Montana,(Whitehall area), my rancher friend always issued extra ATV tags at the beginning of hunting season. He even had an old ATV hung up into the air like a trophy. LOL They are frustrating and in most cases very unethical, as most areas were closed to motorized vehicles in early Sept.

They're a pain in the %($@@% because the people who use them have no regard for anyone else. They're great for getting animals in and out of the woods, but people have to use a little common sense and consideration that they're not the only one's in the woods.

Anyone who says atv use affects hunting or hunters is full of ****. The game no matter what your hunting will not run far because they are curious of the noise and object making the noise. I've seen this first hand myself, so if your able to use a atv do so. It's a shame for all those atv hater's out there they need to bitch about things that really need bitchin about, liuke how states take advanage of their hunters/sportsmen.

I am sure that the folks that live by ATV use to gain thier trophy''s are great hunters in thier own way but what must be seen here is the abuse of the ATV across the board on public hunting land that is beyond the gate of access. Recovery is why I had made my purchase of an ATV. I see many folks dont seem to care what the point may be only that they think that any suggestion of change to thier current freedoms constitutes a fight.Typical responce. I have hunted all over this free country of OURS and DO see the effects of atv rampages across the lands we hunt so carefully. Some of use only have the public land to hunt so if that means a few restrictions but still clear access then so be it as we can still hunt for our interested critters.

Since I don't hunt public lands, I haven't had the problems that some of you have; however, I have had problems with tresspassers using golf carts, motorcycles, and atvs on my private property. I own and use an atv and due to the fact that I am disabled, it is the only means for me to get into and out of some of my hunting areas. In fact, I have killed deer, and bobcats while sitting on my Kodiac. An atv is very similar to farm equipment, and deer and other animals get used to them. I use mine to plant foodplots, and to put corn out during deer season. I have seen deer react to the sound of the atv as if it were a dinner bell.

I do think that there are some people who don't care what, when, where, or how they affect other people or respect the rules and regs. But, there are people like me, who wouldn't be able to do the things we do without the use of a good atv.

absolutly agree with your need. I have used mine for food plots on my land in Iowa and pulling deer out as well. They are and will continue to be a great tool! With time and food to follow I could see how deer would be attracted to the atv's and there sounds. For us two legged folks that must walk beyond the pearly gates to find peace from the riders to just hunt will be a challenge for all
