Figured I would share this. About a year ago, I got a fantastic deal on a Christensen custom 7MM RUM with the “bells and whistles” The original owner had the action lightened, but did not spiralize the bolt because he did not want dirt getting on it? With the as is condition and Leopold scope, I was grouping at 1.5 of an inch at 100 yards.
Sent it in January to Christensen with a new Swarovski Z6 scope that I purchased elsewhere to have them install the scope, look over the rifle and make a few changes. I wanted them to do a complete check up, tell me what was or not done to the gun when they built it as it was supposedly only shot 40 time during break in and sighting in.
When talking about accuracy, they dropped the first bomb on me by saying they have had trouble with getting the 7MM RUMS to shoot accurately and only build them on special request. Supposedly, that had something to do with the chamber space size and bullet?
That was when they wanted me to consider getting a new barrel and chambering it to the 300 RUM. (Cost around $1100)
I told them to install my scope on a set of Talley mounts, spiralize the bolt and then test shoot it to see what it was grouping like. Spoke with the guy that shot it and he was happy as he was grouping .5 of an inch at 100 yards consistently. They cleaned it up and all was ready, but I decided to have the MPI stock repainted to a different pattern. The total bill for the work, rings and testing came to $609.88. So I paid them for that and figured I would see the rifle in a few weeks.
They sent the stock to MPI on April 14 and I called a few days ago to check again and supposedly it had not returned from MPI after 2 and a half months!
So, I wrote an email to John Mogel, Christensen’s President to ask for his help. No response from John, but got an email from the QA department saying the rifle was ready and the total was $609.88. So I had to do the run around to show that I had paid them back in April.
When I wrote John, in the message I mentioned, if it takes almost 3 months just to get a stock back from MPI, I would hate to know how long the wait period was on a gun. So, they have it finally sorted out and are shipping it to superior ammo for some ammo matching.
Don’t let that form your opinion on Christensen as after Larry at superior does some fine work with the ammo, I am sure to be less than .5 inches from the bench at 100 and using the BR retical to plink out past 600.
Just did not like the initial persuasion to “upgrade to a 300, the long lead time and then to be billed twice? Had I not remembered paying them, I may have just as well sent them a second check. Just something to consider when looking at and dealing with Custom gun folks. Not just the initial order, but follow up service.
