Just wondering if anyone has done a do it yourself hunt for bear on Prince Of Wales Island? Would be interested in learning more as I would like to get a group together for next spring.
Thanks,
mark

Missed the spring, but have my tickets booked to go on September 12th for 10 days. have a friend that owns a ca bin on POW Island. Prince of wales island is an island off the south eastern Alaska coast. Only access is by farry or float plane from Ketchekan Alaska.
As i understand they have the denses population of black bear in North America and the skulls on mature bears are 1 1/8 inches (on average) large that other black bears from other parts of NA.
Should be a blast. bringing my hunting bud the taxidermist and his brother along. Made a few swaps with tickets as usual. Should be a great time and as most folks say it is not a matter of seeing bear, nor getting one, but being able to hold out for the monsters. fall also adds the mixture of being in the middle of the salmon run, great halibut fishing and a chance to chase the sika deer in the higher ranges. My focus is on the bear, but a condition for his ticket, my bud will pick up the tab on the charter boats to fishing. Seems like a mixed bag to get the season started.

Wish you the best on your hunt. All of my trips to Alaska have been to Valdez. Since it is always for work I have not had the chance to hunt there but I have had a few days of good fishing in. You should have some really good chances of getting the bear you want.

All in all it was a great trip. The laws changed for September that no longer allow acess to a bear hunting areas via truck. That caused a change in plans and we had to hunt from and acess the areas via boat. basically we would launch, stalk the creeks and then stalk back. Not bad, but it would have been nice to drive to a good creek, hike in and hunt going and coming. that law does not apply in the spring??? Go figure. Saw some good bears, but not the trophy i was after. The tag is still good till spring so looks like I have a reason to return.

Sounds like you you had a good trip, and I hope you get the bear your searching for on your next trip.
