I just won a 5 day rifle hunt this December in Kansas. I was told that shots can range up to 300 yards and I don't have a rifle yet to take with me. Anyone have any insight on what kind of rifle I should get and which ammo would be best to use? 308? 270? 30-06? 300?

I have a 7mm, I shoot and really like it. You can get amo 150gr,165gr and175gr I think. I have been told it is good for deer to elk....... I have had good success with it, I think it is a good all around gun!!!!

apage, I have or have hunted with all of the calibers that you mentioned, plus a few more. All are good deer cartridges out to the 300 yd range you mentioned. I prefer bolt actions like the Remington 700, Savage 110, Ruger 77, Winchester 70, and Weatherby Vanguard that are topped with a quality 3-9x or 4-12x scope. I killed most of my deer, antelope, and sheep with a .257 Roberts Improved which is very similar to a .25-06.
The important thing is to get your rifle now, and and practice with it, a lot, out to 300 yds or more.

I like the 7mm Rem Mag or the 300 Win Mag, dependent on the size of the game.

It depends on your experience with rifles. If it is limited or if you have problems with recoil, I would recommend the .270 Winchester. Otherwise the various 7 mm magnums or .300 magnums would be excellent long range calibers due to their flat trajectories.

Congrads on the hunt. The 06 or 270 will kill anything in North America. That 30 caliber has many different bullet wieghts to load from. My rifle loves 165bt. The 270 should shoot a little flater trjectory. Either will be a good choise. If big bears or Africa are on your agenda, I would go with the 300, or bigger. But that could be anther rifle latter on. Have fun in KS

I have all the rifles you are taking about and have kill game at long range with all but my .308. Not that it would not do it just didn't have it in hand when a long range shot were to be made. The 30-06 would be a good all around gun for you, lot of different load you can buy right out of the store and more if you ever start hand loading. And it is good for most all game in country. Now if it was me, I would grab my .264 win mag or my .257 Weatherby with some of my hand loads for long range shooting.
