I've killed my bears here in California with dogs (which is legal here and baiting is not) so I'm far from the baiting expert. It just seems to me that the only reasons game will vacate one area for another is hunting pressure or food supply. I'm sure that cub bears are taught by their mother to be nomadic according to food supplies for example spring the grass is good over here or summer the berries are over there or the fall salmon run is good in this stream.... they've been going to the same traditional places for generations. How to break that instinct would be a tough one.
If it were me the closer it got to October the more I'd put in the bait, both in quantity and diversity maybe mixing it up with something new would keep them lingering longer. just my 2 cents

When I have bowhunted bears in Canada, the guides use alot of dog food or if creek suckers are in season they will use them but they say the number one best is a dead beaver. My 2 cents too.

Baiting is a funny thing. I live in Wisconsin and we don't have trouble keeping bears coming into our baits. We always have multiple bears coming to our baits - - Wisconsin's DNR has limited bear tags to the point where there are a lot more bear then they admit to. As far as baiting, if you keep their bellies full, they'll keep coming back. Why they quit coming it could be several things - - someone else could be baiting better food, they could be looking for more fattening food, someone could've gotten them, they could be getting sleepy, thirsty or just nomadic. I would suggest early in the year put out more bait than you think they can eat each time. As you get closer to your season, put out smaller amounts. This is for a couple of reasons - - 1) they will come in early if the food is gone or nearly gone when they get to it. If there's too much bait, they can come in after hours. 2) Smaller amounts - 5 gallons or less each day - lets them know there's food there, but they don't get super filled up so they are always hungry for your easy pickens. I would also vary what you bait with, and use the same scent each time you rebait so they know when the food is out. Many times we have bear come in within 30 minutes of baiting - - it can make for a short sit in the tree.

When baiting was still legal in VA we went to the Krispy Kream and got the out of date donuts for free. The bear loved those. Of course it was illegal to hunt directly over bait but we could start our dogs there.

well here in Maine I feed th bears out of 55gallon drums 20gallons 2 times weekly during the month prior to opening day..then when season is open and you bait prior to sitting (bait light 5-10gallons) makes them come in early also I spray a blueberry scented spray over the area..and I also have a molasses drip( 5 gallon bucket).I also have used Stink bag (Burlap sack hanging in a tree)filled with old meat..apples and ears of corn for the cubs...if the cubs are at ease so is momma bear..which means the big boars hiding in the shadows awaiting there turn to strap on the feed bag come in more at ease..ok so this was more like a nickels worth..lol

Two words.....BEAVER CARCASS ! I have a trapper who lives near me and he gives me all the dead beavers I want . They are the best bear bait I've ever used. I also get stale doughnuts from a local shop. the two seem to work well ! I had baits hitting every day for two weeks in october last year . I know your delema, getting them there is one thing, keeping them there is quite another. Beavers and old doughnuts work for me every time.

Not sure if you are still checking this post...it is old.
Good ideas here already......
I dont know about fall baiting but cant believe it is too different than spring. In Alaska baiting season is in the spring and the key is to keep the bait barrel full. Bears will continue to come after removing the barrel to pick up s****s and if you bait the same site year after year, they will be there waiting for the barrel before you put it out.
The Alaska Outdoors Hunting forum has a bear baiting specific forum thread with lots of recipes and strategies.

Another key is consistency. As many have mentioned the bait bucket has to be full cause if they run out then they look elsewhere. I used to bait every day at the same time and they would actually be waiting when I got there. I would no sooner leave and they would come in with the truck still within hearing distance. The trick is to train them to your schedule. You are not outsmarting them so it is key to train them for several weeks before the hunt. Consistency the same way every day if you can. Meat a lot of times will cause the dominant boar to hang out and actually get mean when comming in to bait. Anything sweet is great like day old pastry of any kind. If you use bread, buy maple syrup in the 1 gal bottles and dump over bread. This works well and goes a long way. Everyone has old bread to give away. Another trick is to spread some baking grease around the bait. That way when the bear come asn go they track the grease on the bottom of their feet. This will spread the scent further and potentially attract more bear.
